“A small group of NIS staff and students visited an orphanage on the other side of Semey’s Irtysh river. The children at the orphanage were putting on a performance they had prepared. They sang, danced, recited poetry and demonstrated traditional Kazakh culture. Staff from the orphanage evaluated the performances to determine the best entertainers. They graciously accepted us as guests and we enjoyed their unique performances very much! Their joy and enthusiasm was infectious and renewed our spirits. Toward the end of the performance, NIS staff and students gave a short announcement regarding our visit and desire to continue working together with them. Finally, we gave them sweets, chocolates and bags filled with small gifts. We hope to develop more than a superficial relationship with the school, one that will result in concrete results and actions into the future!”
