NIS Semey students found a new way to extract fresh water

10th grade students of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics in Semey, Pakzhan Niyazbek and Erasyl Myrkhiev, made it to the finals of the special competition “Care for the Earth, Care for People”. The competition was organized jointly by OLZHA AGRO and ENACTUS KAZAKHSTAN. More than 60 teams from all regions of the country took part in the competition, which consisted of several stages.

– A special competition is aimed at improving the welfare of the population in rural areas and preventing mass migration from the village to the city. We worked on a project to provide villagers with clean drinking water. Over the past year, research work has been carried out on the project, we have tried to find a solution to a complex problem that is relevant not only for our country, but for the whole world. It is worth noting that among the 8 candidate teams that received a ticket to the final, only we were schoolchildren. The rest of the participants are university students, say the young researchers.

The relevance of the Pakzhan and Erasyl projects lies in the extraction of fresh water from the air. The “Water from air” device is a method of obtaining water from air through condensation. Atmospheric water vapor generated from rain, fog or dew condenses on the cold surface of the grate and accumulates in a reservoir located at the bottom of its structure. “Productivity directly depends on the weather. But according to our calculations, it is possible to get up to 100 liters of water per day,” say our students.

The study was conducted mainly based on data from 5 villages in the densely populated southern region of the country, where there is a shortage of water. In case of victory in the final, our students plan to install a water intake tower in the village and intend to continue the project. The final of the competition will be held on May 12 this year as part of ENACTUS Kazakhstan National EXPO 2022.
