Congratulations on winning the competition!

Recently, the republican distance competition for young researchers «CosmoStars» was held, dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the first manned flight into space. Alemzhan Akhmetzhanov, a student of the 8th grade of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics in the city of Semey, took part in this competition, he took first place.

In the republican competition of scientific projects, organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the republican educational and health center «Baldauren», 156 works were accepted, of which 38 went to the final stage.

– Alemzhan’s project is called Sailing Into Space. The relevance of the project is that a solar sail is a unique form of engine that does not need fuel to create jet thrust, so it can provide continuous acceleration. The possibility of creating space flying vehicles on an active solar sail has been investigated. Various design options have been worked out and the parameters of the elements have been calculated. The prototyping of the proposed design has been completed, says one of the project leaders, physics teacher Zhadyra Akhataeva.

As another project manager Serik Anibaev notes, the scientific novelty of the project is that the students of our school are offered a method of access to space, which is notable for its low cost in comparison with existing rocket methods. The solar sail is a design designed to replace typical rocket motors. In this work Alemzhan proposes an umbrella-shaped model of the solar sail.
