The team “kzSGM” from Semey took a prize

The Semey team “kzSGM” became the winner of the World Olympiad in LEGO Robotics WRO 2020. Due to the epidemiological situation, the organizers held an online competition. It was held from 12 to 15 November in Montreal, Canada; about 450 teams from 50 countries took part in the Olympiad.

This season has been dedicated to the Climate Squad theme. Each team participating in the competition had to overcome adverse and dangerous climatic conditions and create a robot capable of solving the problems associated with climate change. In addition, pupils of the 11th grade of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics in Semey Miras Muratkanov and Nurbol Maktaev took part in this competition and took the sixth place in the “Surprise” category. In total, 184 teams competed in this category, and constructors aged 16 to 19 fought for eight prizes.

– This was our first time with Miras in a world-class Olympiad. Previously, we had the opportunity to participate in competitions of the republican level and win prizes. Our teacher Bakhytbek Nurlybekovich and I began to thoroughly prepare after we heard about our participation in the competition. This competition has become a great practical platform for us. We were very glad to see ourselves among the winners and are very grateful to our school and Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools for the opportunity to take part in this Olympiad and try our luck, – said Nurbol Maktaev.

According to the students, the organizers of the Olympiad made some changes this year, and the children had only 24 hours to complete the tasks in the “Surprise” category. As part of this task, the team members created a new robot, clearly developing a program of its actions, such as movement, walking, and performing certain tasks.

The names of two young robotics engineers are well known in our city. Last year, they created a robot-dombra player who played the work of the poet “Tor Zhorga”. For this work, they were awarded the Semey Akim Prize for their contribution to the implementation of the state youth policy. Thanks to their knowledge, they have conquered another peak. As the young inventors admit, their goal now is not to stop there and move on.
