Nauryz Holiday in the Intellectual School

Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics in Semey celebrated Nauryz holiday. This is widely known that a great traditional holiday is celebrated when the grass turns green and the earth warms up. People in the past celebrated the beginning of the New Year up to 40 days because of the climate conditions of the Kazakh steppe. Based on this, the students, teachers, parents all together celebrated Nauryz.
In the courtyard of the school there were built 12 completely white yurts, which represented the auls of various nationalities. On this day, not only the Kazakh aul opened its doors to its guests, but also Kyrgyz, Uzbek, Tazhik, Turkmen, Tatar, Azerbaizhani, Iranian, Uygur, Pakistani, Turkish and Afghan villages were distinguished.
“In 2010, the UN General Assembly claimed in its data: “300 million people in the Balkan Peninsula, the Black Sea, the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Middle East have been celebrating the spring-Nauryz holiday for more than 3000 years”.
On September 30, 2009, UNESCO included the Nauryz holiday in the list of the non-material cultural heritage of humankind. Even based on these data, we can say that Nauryz is a common holiday for many nations around the world. Kazakhstan is a multinational state. Considering this fact, in order to show respect for the language, traditions, customs and culture of various ethnic groups living in our country, each class that represented a certain nationality in its yurt was given a special task to reveal the nature and peculiarities of a given people. We were also pleased by how our parents were sympathetic to the organization and supported us. Thus, we wanted to show our friendship and harmony by celebrating the holiday with different nationalities under one shanyrak in an organized and united way”, said the school director Bagdan Kaiyrzhanov.
Semey Deputy Mayor – Kanat Adilbayev, Head of the Internal Policy Department – Nurzhan Yesenzholov, Director of the “City Language Center” – Zauresh Isabayeva, Director of the Russian Drama Theater named after F. Dostoevsky – Yakob Gorelnikov, Director of the educational center “Erudite”- Arafat Mamyrbekov came to the holiday as honorable guests.
The concert program and theatre performances of students and teachers also helped to raise the spirit of the celebration. The holiday was realised by: an orchestra of 180 students called “Sekirtpe”, an ensemble of kyu performers – “Erke sylkym”, an ethno-folklore ensemble – “Dala sazy” (kyu “Korogly”), a dance group “Asyl” – “Ak Zhaiyk” “, a dance group “Samruk”- “Koktem”, “Zhas Kiyal”, “Shalkyma”, VIA vocal quartet, choir and solo performers.
“I learned about the Nauryz holiday two years ago. Semey is the first city where I began my work experience in Kazakhstan. People here never cease to amaze with their hospitality, care and modesty. Thanks to these ordinary people, I received a lot of information about Nauryz origin, significance, and its celebration, which is not only a holiday of the Kazakh people, but also of many eastern nations. Nauryz is a national holiday. When national traditions are celebrated, the ancient customs are revived. In this respect, I was very impressed. Today I had the opportunity to taste the dishes of each nation and get to know them better. Happy Nauryz”, shared his opinion the international teacher of our school – Hrvoje Moric.
Indeed, on this day the schoolyard was full of fun. In each yurt’s dastarkhan was laid with different national dishes. The parents and students, who dressed up the national costumes of various nations, danced, sang songs, and played national games.
The second part of the concert program was continued by the talented performers of the M. Tolebayev music school, Semey A. Kashaubayev Philharmony in the East Kazakhstan region and the City Palace of Culture.
As part of the event, Shanyrak hours were organized, and a documentary film about Nauryz was shown. This is how our great, traditional holiday was celebrated.
